Advanced modeling systems have injected a new level of sophistication into the design of high voltage systems. Innovations in 3-D modeling have benefited designers and customers by adding clarity to what can otherwise be a cluttered design.

Integrated engineering services are all contained in one model that embodies both equipment and specifications. With the many components represented in the design of substations and transmission lines, some design intent is lost with conventional 2-D drawing schemes. For example, conduit and grounding drawings, which are separate 2-D drawings, are combined into one 3-D animation to clearly and accurately show equipment connections. The increased simplicity and precision of 3-D animations are especially useful in complex designs such as SVC and HVDC projects.

Using 3-D design, costly concerns, such as safe electrical clearances, are more easily identified before a project mobilizes for construction. Digital terrain models enable designers to see a realistic lay of the land modeled with transmission lines to more accurately determine overhead clearance.

Ultimately, 3-D design allows designers to help customers more realistically visualize the completed substation.
